My Own Private Island

Where do ideas come from? For me, they usually begin with a feeling or a psychological state, and the main focus of my work is to find ways to express those things.. At the end of September I discovered I have breast cancer, and once the shock had passed, I was able to accept it with a fair amount of equanimity and make the decision to have a double mastectomy. The theme for a local show was Travel: Where have I been, Where do I want to go? At that moment, instead of an operating room, I wanted to go to an island, alone, with white sand and a small grove of trees to sleep under. A warm pool to bathe in, and a fresh water stream, and the ocean all around,. That was where I wanted to be.. So I made this, and it helped. I didn’t need to keep the piece, and was pleased when it was purchased by a woman who has already collected three of my mosaics. It will hang in her Yoga studio, where others will enjoy its sparkling sea.
